Top 10 Integrated Utility Companies To Watch In Right Now

The employment picture is looking prettier. But encouraging data released today won be enough to trigger a change of policy at the Federal Reserve.

That the opinion of Sterne Agee chief economist, Lindsey Piegza, in a note released this morning following reports that initial jobless claims fell 5,000 from 310,000 to 305,000 during the week ending Sept, 21. Piegza writes:

A continued declined in jobless claims suggest at least some improvement in the labor market or at least in the first part of the jobs equation: lower job destruction. The second part of the equation, job creation, however, remains tepid. Going forward, at least from the Fed point of view, a slower pace of layoffs is not enough to suggest sustainable momentum in the labor market or trigger a change in policy.

The data, a proxy for layoffs, point to an improving jobs picture. Economists had anticipated a rise in new claims to 330,000. Instead, jobless claims now sit at a level last consistently seen in 2007. That signals rising confidence among employers about the economic recovery.

Records fell on Wall Street Friday as another solid report on housing lifted the market for the second day in a row. There's a three-day weekend coming up -- something that often prompts investor caution -- but the gains were broad-based even though volume was fairly light. The VIX, which measures volatility, fell to its lowest level this year. The Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI) gained 63 points, the Nasdaq composite (^IXIC) rose 31, and the Standard & Poor's 500 index (^GPSC) added 8, topping the record high set last week. The Dow Transportation average also raced to an all-time high, lifted by airline stocks. United (UAL) soared more than 4 percent; Delta (DAL) gained more than 1 percent and Southwest (LUV) gained 2 percent. Southwest is at an all-time high, up 79 percent from a year ago. New home sales bounced back with a better than expected 6.4 percent increase last month. Lennar (LEN) and D.R. Horton (DHI) both rose 4 percent. Pulte (PHM), Beazer (BZH) and Hovnanian (HOV) also solid posted gains. Earnings continue to drive retail stocks. Gap (GPS) edged higher even though net fell. Foot Locker (FL) gained 1½ percent after topping expectations. GameStop (GME) rose 4 percent. Its net rose, helped by the rollout last year of new Xbox and PlayStation consoles. Zumiez (ZUMZ) rose 5½ percent on an earnings beat. But Aeropostale (ARO) tumbled 24 percent. Its loss widened and sales declined. The retailer continues to struggle with teen fashion trends. Also on the earnings front, TiVo (TIVO) rose 2 percent as it swung to a profit from a year ago loss. It also reported an increase in the number of subscribers. Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) rose 6 percent on news the company plans to eliminate up to 16,000 additional workers in an effort to cut costs. And several stocks extended big moves from yesterday. Best Buy (BBY) rose more than 3 percent for the second straight day after earnings beat expectations. Isis Pharmaceuticals (ISIS) jumped

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Rick Munarriz]

In this video, Rick argues that the problem could be the ever-widening McCafe menu. The push for smoothies and premium coffee beverages has been generally applauded by analysts, giving the chain pricier drink options that can help prop up the amount that a typical customer will spend at the restaurant. Fruit smoothies helped define Jamba (NASDAQ: JMBA  ) and provided a spark at Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX  ) , but these are companies that specialize in beverages. Having a broad range of menu items at Jamba Juice and Starbucks is fine. It's different at McDonald's where customers call it "fast food" for a reason. If customers are waiting longer and the cacophony of automated smoothie blenders and coffee orders that aren't made just right are hurting the dining experience, McDonald's may want to reconsider the upscale shot.

  • [By Brian Pacampara]

What: Shares of Jamba Juice (NASDAQ: JMBA  ) plummeted 19% today after the fruit smoothie chain slashed its outlook for 2013.

So what: Jamba shares have rallied nicely over the past year on steadily improving same-store sales, but yesterday's downbeat guidance reignites serious concerns over its ability to grow profitably. While the news wasn't all bad (Jamba also announced that retail giant Targetwill be rolling out 1,000 JambaGo locations), management's disappointing outlook for sales, four-wall profit margins, and operating earnings suggests that Jamba's competitive position is rapidly weakening.

    Anything but smoothie
Fruit smoothie and juice maker Jamba (NASDAQ: JMBA  ) recently completed a 1-for-5 reverse split to make its share price more attractive to more risk-averse investors and Wall Street institutions. However, no amount of cosmetic changes is enough to hide the lack of progress at Jamba over the past six years.

  • [By Teresa Rivas]

Jamba (JMBA) was rising 5% in after-hours trading, following the smoothie maker second-quarter earnings report.

The company said it earned 36 cents a share, meeting analystsexpectations. However, revenue of $67.3 million was below the $70.4 million consensus.

System-wide same-store sales rose 1.7%: That includes a 2.2% comp increase for company-owned stores, while franchise operated locations logged a 1.2% gain.

Jamba says it plans to develop 60 to 80 stores in the U.S. and oversees for the fiscal year as a whole, as well as add 1,000 JambaGo served locations.

The stock is up 22% in the past year, keeping pace with the broader market.
