Hammering that home, IDC has forecast that there will be 450 million smartphones sold in China next year. The People’s Republic rapidly has�turned from a market for dumb handsets to one in which smartphones obviously have�begun to replace PCs at an accelerated�rate, following a pattern already in place in developed nations. The stakes for smartphone companies have risen. Because the market is so new, global leaders Samsung and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) do not necessarily have the advantages they do elsewhere.

As Reuters recently reported, Lenovo, which does not have any meaningful presence elsewhere in the world, is the second largest smartphone�company in China, with a market share of 9.8% compared to Samsung’s 18.5%. (NASDAQ: GOOG) would die by the end of the decade. Its association with Google may allow it to turn around. On the other hand, HTC, which appeared on the march to do as well as Samsung, has fallen apart, plagued by phones that are poorly designed and have glitches.

CalAmp Corp. (CalAmp) develops and markets wireless technology solutions that deliver data, voice and video for critical networked communications and other applications.     This week's loser
    The laggard this week was foreign telecommunications provider Orange (NYSE: ORAN  ) (formerly France Telecom), which dipped 4.2% on the week. Although no company-specific news set off the pessimism, regional worries out of Portugal that austerity measures may not stick sent ripples of fear throughout Europe, where the heart of Orange's revenue stream is located. I purchased Orange in my own portfolio late last year on the high prospects for its emerging market growth coupled with steady European cash flow. While I certainly haven't liked seeing its dividend get cut by more than 40%, and feel more hiccups may be on the way, I see it as an incredible cash cow at these levels, and am still considering adding to my position.

    About a year ago, Orange (ORAN) was brought up on this site as a potential value investment. (Back then, we knew it as France Telecom (FTE).) Sentiment was in the toilet. A weak European economy combined with new regulations and an upstart competitor scared investors away, resulting in price to free cash flow ratios in the single digits. But these are exactly the conditions under which investors should be buying. When temporary issues (and there were a trifecta here!) affect a historically profitable business in an industry with barriers to entry, it can create a buying opportunity if investors are running scared. That appears to have been what happened here. The regulatory issues eased up as did the competitive environment, and shares of Orange have risen 60% to what I would consider a more appropriate valuation. Some of the comments I received when I wrote the article last year include: "FTE will end, but I think it has more than enough strength to limp on for another decade at least, dragging on yield hungry investors that don't know any better." "Lets not look at the horrible French economy" "worsening unemployment" "government that loves to socialize, ruin their private businesses" "It's been in decline year after year after year."     LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Japanese stocks rose Wednesday after a lower open, managing solid gains with most other Asian markets were closed for the Christmas holiday. The Nikkei Stock Average (JP:NIK) climbed 0.8% to 16,009.99, its first close above the 16,000 level since late 2007. The broader Topix ended with a more modest 0.1% rise. Seven & I Holdings Co.     Opposition to the latest wireless rumored wireless merger might have come as a surprise to Sprint’s CEO/pitchman Daniel Hesse and Masayoshi Son, the head of Japan’s SoftBank (SFTBF), which acquired a controlling interest in Sprint for $1.9 billion last year. For one thing, it’s hard to imagine the new company posing much of a competitive threat. A combined Sprint/T-Mobile would have 53 million users — significantly greater than their individual parts, but still less than half the 110 million served by AT&T and the 120 million subscribers under the Verizon flag.
