10 Best Mid Cap Stocks To Invest In Right Now

By Ironwood Investment Management

The Ironwood SMID Cap Value portfolio had a strong February. The strategy advanced 6% for the month. The strategy's materials and processing, producer durables, utility and energy stocks drove the strong performance.

Within those sectors some of the better performing stocks were Platform Specialty Products (PAH), Carrizo Oil & Gas (CRZO), Weatherford International (WFT), Xylem (XYL), Zynga (ZNGA) and Dynegy (DYN). The one thing all of these stocks have in common is that the management team is executing on the transition strategy that we outlined when we first purchased the stock.

We did not initiate any positions in February. Here are the positions eliminated in February.

Itron (ITRI): We owned Itron as of our January 1, 2013 inception date as we believed the new CEO Philip Mezey, hired in November 2012, would renew the company's focus on advancing its technology and rationalizing its cost structure after a series of mergers. This transition was needed as the company was facing a period of reduced levels of new orders.

After a banner 2013, the overall market has had a challenging start to 2014. However, these four companies have been crushing it: Alexander Real Estate (NYSE: ARE  ) , BioMed Realty Trust (NYSE: BMR  ) , CommonWealth REIT (NYSE: CWH  ) , and Sun Communities (NYSE: SUI  ) early on in 2014 vs. the S&P 500. It's a rarity that I reiterate an idea I've previously opined... particularly one that I only published just a couple of days earlier. The fact that I'm going to do so with AvWorks Aviation Corp. (OTCMKTS:SPLI) - perhaps better known to some as Vapor Group - should tell you how important it is to re-convey the message. Here goes...

  • [By James E. Brumley]

It's admittedly scary to try and catch a falling knife, but sometimes it's worth the risk. Case in point? AvWorks Aviation Corp. (OTCMKTS:SPLI) .... better known as Vapor Group. Without knowing more about the stock, the sheer fact that SPLI has fallen nearly 90% since March 26th - with about a third of that coming today alone - the stock would be best left avoided by nearly any trader. For the small group of savvy traders that know the tell-tale signs and know how the market really works, however, AvWorks Aviation, or Vapor Group, may be in a prime buying situation today.... yes, even in the midst of this bloodbath.

In addition, it had 120 gross producing wells. The company was founded in 1986 and is headquartered in Calgary, Canada.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By RichardCox]

The first stock choice we look at here is Enerplus Corp. (ERF), which has most of its resources invested in Western Canadian properties that are in the mature development stage. This puts the company in a solid position (as far as risk protection) for two reasons: The company is largely shielded from potential supply disruptions if Middle East conflicts cause transport blockages at the Suez Canal. Furthermore, Canada holds its position as the largest source of U.S. oil imports -- nearly doubling what is sent annually by Saudi Arabia. Yearly numbers for 2012 put Canadian oil imports at roughly 2.8 million barrels in a supportive trend that helped second-quarter earnings at Enerplus rise by 10%. The fundamental sector outlook is suggestive of additional runs higher in Enerplus, and these should begin to gain traction once the external uncertainties (political gridlock, stimulus tapering) begin to resolve themselves. The stock also comes with a 6.4% dividend yield, which will help investors weather the storm if the recent declines in oil extend further.
