Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Travis Hoium]

What: Shares of Solazyme (NASDAQ: SZYM  ) fell as much as 20% today after it agreed to dissolve a promising joint venture.

So what: Solazyme and Roquette, a starch and starch-derivatives company, agreed to dissolve a joint venture formed in 2010 to create alternative foods from microalgae. The companies couldn't decide on a manufacturing and marketing strategy so they decided to go their separate ways.

  • [By Robert Rapier]

There's a company called Solazyme (SZYM) who actually makes fuel out of algae; but they couldn't make it very economically so they shifted into neutroceuticals and pharmaceuticals and making oils for cosmetics and things like that.

  • [By Alyce Lomax]

Alternative oils play Solazyme (NASDAQ: SZYM  ) may have just gotten riskier; apparently, many investors think so. Unlike many stocks today, Solazyme's trip! to the w! oodshed is hinged on actual news and, unfortunately, it's one of the market's biggest decliners as of this writing. Today we learned that one of its partnerships will be dissolved within weeks.

I should mention that we recently added CalAmp Corp to our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio based aroundourongoingInternet of Things growth theme plus the company appears well positionedin the M2M space for the next few years.

Top 5 Heal Care Stocks For 2014

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- Professional traders running mutual funds and hedge funds don't just look at a stock's price moves; they also track big changes in volume activity. Often when above-average volume moves into an equity, it precedes a large spike in volatility.

>>5 Stocks Insiders Love Right Now

Major moves in volume can signal unusual activity, such as insider buying or selling -- or buying or selling by "superinvestors."

Unusual volume can also be a major signal that hedge funds and momentum traders are piling into a stock ahead of a catalyst. These types of traders like to get in well before a large spike, so it's always a smart move to monitor unusual volume. That said, remember to combine trend and price action with unusual volume. Put them all together to help you decipher the next big trend for any stock.

>>5 Stocks Set to Soar on Bullish Earnings

With that in mind, let's take a look at several stocks rising on unusual volume today.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By James E. Brumley]

A week and a half ago when I suggested Latteno Food Corp. (OTCMKTS:LATF) was an effective way of getting into the medical marijuana craze for anyone who missed the big runups (the first or the second time) from names like Medical Marijuana Inc. (OTCMKTS:MJNA) or Hemp, Inc. (OTCMKTS:HEMP), not many people agreed with my assessment. That's the nice way of saying I received some "colorful counter-opinions" to my bullishness on LATF. Indeed, some readers were downright enraged I would dare compare the company to stocks like MJNA or HEMP, citing reasons ranging from the possibility that it's a complete scam to the possibility that the capital structure as amazingly unfair to current shareholders.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

Wow. That didn't take long. It was only two days ago that marijuana stocks like Growlife Inc. (OTCBB:PHOT), Medical Marijuana Inc. (OTCMKTS:MJNA), Cannabis Science Inc. (OTCMKTS:CBIS), Medbox Inc. (OTCMKTS:MDBX), and Hemp, Inc. (OTCMKTS:HEMP) were all the rage, flying high on the heels of a new year... a new year in which marijuana was legalized (for one reason or another) in two more states. HEMP was up as much as 700% in less than three weeks at one point. MDBX gained 300% at the beginning of the year, when recreational marijuana began to be legally sold in Colorado. CBIS jumped 400% off of its December low. MJNA nearly doubled on the advent of new marijuana venues. PHOT soared more than 130% since the end of last year on the legalization of marijuana. It was, truthfully, some of the fastest big money that traders have ever made in the market.

  • [By Dan Burrows]

Just look at Hemp Inc. (HEMP). HEMP stock rallied as much as 60% Tuesday on anticipation of the Senate’s approval of thefarm bill that would effectively legalize the cultivation of hemp. And hemp isn’t something you even smoke. This close cousin of marijuana cannabis can be refined into a wide-range of goods, including hemp oil, rope, cloth, paper and fuel. But it doesn’t have medical or recreational uses like marijuana does.

Top 5 Heal Care Stocks For 2014: Enanta Pharmaceuticals Inc (ENTA)

Enanta Pharmaceuticals, Inc., incorporated on July 25, 1995, is a research and development-focused biotechnology company. The Company uses its chemistry-driven approach and drug discovery capabilities to create small molecule drugs in the infectious disease field. The Company is discovering and developing novel inhibitors designed for use against the hepatitis C virus (HCV). These inhibitors include members of the direct acting antiviral (DAA) inhibitor classes-protease (partnered with AbbVie, the former research-based pharmaceutical business of Abbott Laboratories), NS5A (partnered with Novartis) and nucleotide polymerase, as well as a host targeted antiviral (HTA) inhibitor class targeted against cyclophilin. ABT-450, discovered through its collaboration with AbbVie, is a protease inhibitor that has demonstrated in vitro potency against known resistant HCV mutants.

In Phase I studies, ABT-450 co-administered with ritonavir, a commonly used boosting agent to increase the blood concentrations of many protease inhibitors, was shown to be safe and well tolerated. Co-administration of ABT-450 with ritonavir, which it refers to together as ABT-450/r, has enabled once-daily dosing of ABT-450. Phase II studies have demonstrated the efficacy of ABT-450/r in patients with chronic HCV, and other interferon-free Phase II studies of ABT-450-containing regimens continue. AbbVie is developing a next-generation protease inhibitor discovered within the Enanta-AbbVie collaboration. EDP-239 is the NS5A inhibitor discovered by the Company. The Company also has a program to develop nucleotide inhibitors to HCV NS5B polymerase, which is another DAA mechanism considered to have a barrier to resistance. The Company Bicyclolide antibiotic product candidate is EDP-788, which it is developing for use as an intravenous drug in the hospital setting and for oral dosing in the home setting. EDP-788 is a prodrug, which means that it is inactive until it is converted in the body into an active compound. EDP-788 is! a water-soluble molecule which, when administered in preclinical models, is cleanly and rapidly converted into the active compound.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Sean Williams]

The next big thing in treating hepatitis-C
The other currently experimental therapy very likely to make it onto the FDA's desk before the midpoint of 2014 is AbbVie's (NYSE: ABBV  ) direct-acting antiviral combo drug. In similar fashion to Sovaldi, this DAA-combo therapy, which includes ABT-450 from Enanta Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ENTA  ) , is running six confirmatory late-stage trials on various genotypes. There are, however, two primary differences between AbbVie's DAA-combo therapy and Sovaldi.

  • [By George Budwell]

Normally, such strong efficacy results would be hailed as a major achievement. However, these results are actually less impressive than those by competing drug's developed by AbbVie (NYSE: ABBV  ) , Enanta Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ENTA  ) and Gilead. Bristol-Myers' therapy also has a treatment duration double that of Gilead's drug Sovaldi for genotype 1 patients. So, while these results are impressive in their own right, the therapy's commercial prospects may be limited due to the presence of superior competitors in the market.

The Company was founded in 1955 and is based in Walnut Creek, California.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Sean Williams]

    Green paw
The month of May has been one to forget for shareholders of Central Garden & Pet (NASDAQ: CENT  ) (NASDAQ: CENTA  ) . The maker of pet products as well as seeds and herbicides for lawn care tumbled after it missed Wall Street's earnings estimates for a second straight quarter. The biggest downside pressure came from its lawn care segment, which saw expenses rise as fertilizer margins fell. However, now could be the time to consider jumping on board this interesting pet/lawn care hybrid company, as it has the potential to unlock shareholder value in a number of ways.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

I hate to be the one to day I told you so, but, I told you so. Back on January 3rd I suggested DragonWave, Inc. (NASDAQ:DRWI) was on the verge of a rally, and only needed to clear one more hurdle to get the ball rolling to the point where it wouldn't stop. Well, DRWI did the deed two trading days later, and sure enough the stock's advanced 6% since then (and was up as much as 16% at one point earlier today). Better still, it looks like the bulls have only begun to do their thing.

Best Transportation Stocks To Own Right Now

Even as Federal Reserve policymakers seemed unsure of the immediate direction of the global economy, debating whether disinflation could be an issue in the short term at their meeting March 18-19, most of them expected inflation would return to 2 percent in the next few years, according to minutes of the gathering released April 9.

But just when within the next two years inflation would start rising has been a point of debate, and the fact that producer prices exceeded economist expectations this week reinforced the idea that policymakers, for all their good intentions, may not time interest rates correctly to contain runaway inflation, as historically has been the case.

And this situation also clearly calls for the need to have investments that can simultaneously enhance earnings and protect against inflation, which can appear more suddenly than policymakers have forecasted. Energy infrastructure or midstream Master Limited Partnerships (MLPs) can deliver this investment flexibility, offering investors exposure to the shale boom or commodity price rises, tax benefits, and most MLPs’ contracts are protected against the producer price increases we saw this month.

The prices businesses receive for their goods and services rose in March, defying a long stretch of subdued inflation across the U.S. economy, according to the Wall Street Journal. The producer price index for final demand, which measures changes in prices for everything from food and machinery to warehousing and transportation services, rose a seasonally adjusted 0.5% from February, the Labor Department reported on April 11. The index rose 0.6%, excluding the volatile categories of food and energy.

Economists surveyed by the Wall Street Journal had expected the index to rise a more modest 0.1%, and predicted a 0.2% increase excluding food and energy. The index fell 0.1% in February, unchanged from the Labor Department’s initial estimate. The PPI for final demand was up 1.4% in March from a year earlier! , the biggest year-over-year increase since last August.

The PPI measures the prices businesses receive from buyers such as governments, consumers and other businesses. The Labor Department overhauled the report this year to measure a much broader swath of the U.S. economy.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One under-$10 trucking player that's starting to trend within range of triggering a big breakout trade is YRC Worldwide (YRCW), which, through its subsidiaries, provides various transportation services primarily in North America.. This stock has been hit hard by the bears over the last three months, with shares off sharply by 50%.

If you take a look at the chart for YRC Worldwide, you'll notice that this stock has been downtrending badly for the last five months, with shares plunging lower from its high of $33.89 to its recent low of $7.06 a share. During that downtrend, shares of YRCW have been making mostly lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That said, shares of YRCW have now started to stabilize and the stock has formed a triple bottom chart pattern over the last month, at $7.06, $7.20 and $7.44 a share. Shares of YRCW have now reversed its downtrend and started to uptrend, with the stock moving higher from $7.06 to its recent high of $10.50 a share. That move has now pushed shares of YRCW within range of triggering a big breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in YRCW if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $10.63 a share to its 50-day moving average of $10.87 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average volume of 826,789 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then YRCW will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels $12.38 to $15 a share. Any high-volume move above $15 will then give YRCW a chance to tag $16 to $18 a share.

Traders can look to buy YRCW off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right around some key near-term support levels at $9.20 or at $8.35 a share. One can also buy YRCW off strength once it starts to clear those breakout levels with volume and then simply us

But one reason why trucking stocks have done so well is that investors are starting to see the potential for consolidation in the industry. Long-beleaguered YRC Worldwide (NASDAQ: YRCW  ) apparently made an offer to buy out peer Arkansas Best (NASDAQ: ABFS  ) in May, and although Arkansas Best rebuffed the bid, it still points to the efficiency gains that smaller trucking and logistics companies could gain from combining forces.

Costs have been another big concern for YRC Worldwide (NASDAQ: YRCW  ) which has been unprofitable on an annual basis since 2006. Rather than go bankrupt, YRC diluted shareholders into oblivion, ultimately saving it from Chapter 11 but destroying nearly all shareholder value. In order to cut down on its own expenses, YRC has considered merging with Arkansas Best.

Wunderlich’s Nicholas Bender thinks FedEx’s results bode well for Old Dominion (ODFL), Con-way (CNW) and Saia (SAIA):

We expect all less-than-truckload carriers to benefit in 2Q14 from the same trends that carried FedEx Freight to a banner 4Q14. This includes Hold-rated Old Dominion, which will continue to grow at well above market rates, and Buy-rated Con-way, which we believe can leverage a strong 2Q14 to prime the pump on margin enhancement efforts. Our favorite name in the space remains Saia (SAIA-$42.92, Buy), which will once again see accelerating tonnage growth in 2Q14. Though tonnage growth will moderate in 2H14 due to steeper comps, there remains considerable potential for the company to boost yield and continue winning incremental business with new accounts.

Despite what can best be described as asoft economy, small cap trucking stocks YRC Worldwide, Inc (NASDAQ: YRCW), Arkansas Best Corporation (NASDAQ: ABFS), Frozen Food Express Industries, Inc (NASDAQ: FFEX), Saia Inc (NASDAQ: SAIA) and USA Truck, Inc (NASDAQ: USAK) have been trucking some pretty impressive returns since the start of the year. In fact, these small cap trucking stocks are up anywhere from 72% to 150% or so since the start of the year despite the slow economy. Certainly trucking stocks provide a good indicator of how the economy is doing, but might investors bejumping the gun by pushing up these trucking stocks?

Alfa Romeo 4C - Italian with attitude

Alfa Romeo is back with style!   Alfa Romeo is back with style! NEW YORK (CNNMoney) The Alfa Romeo 4C is, without question, the worst car I've ever loved.

I spent a full day driving it until, literally, my butt was sore. Along the way, I racked up a list of complaints that grew by the mile. But when I woke up the next morning I wanted to go drive it some more.

It was noisy, like being in a chain factory. It rode hard. Steering it, especially at slow speeds, was an NFL-level workout. But, put that all together, and you get an experience that involves your senses intimately in the act of driving a car. It's the kind of thing you don't get much anymore in this age of computerized power everything.

The emphasis is on light weight, not raw power. Instead of a big V6 or V8 engine, it's got a 237 horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that lives in glass-roofed little house behind the two occupants. The body is made largely from carbon fiber and aluminum to keep the car light and nimble. The 4C is not the most powerful or the fastest car I've ever driven but it is one of the most fun.

Gallery - 707-horsepower Dodge Challenger Hellcat

Now, that said, there is one thing that gets left out of driving this new Alfa Romeo sports car. That would be your left foot. The 4C is actually a very modern car and that means there is no manual transmission. It's not even an option because the car simply wasn't designed for it. You put the car in Drive or Reverse using push buttons and you can shift gears up and down using steering wheel mounted paddles. No clutch needed. You can't even get one if you want it.

2015 alfa romeo 4c Gallery - Inside the Alfa Romeo 4C

The transmission shifts crisply, though, and its shifts are well timed when left to work on its own. You can use a switch in the center to choose between more and less aggressive shifting styles.

The 4C looks like an exotic car, it drives like an exotic car and, no surprise, it turns heads like an exotic car. The one I was driving drew admiring gazes everywhere I went and people were always surprised to hear its price. Once it's in full production later this year, you'll be able to get one at prices starting at roughly $54,000.

Still, Alfa Romeo doesn't plan on selling a very large number of these cars in the United States. That's probably a good thing. While it has ample charm to woo a certain type of buyer there are, after all, only so many of that type. But those few should thoroughly enjoy themselves, at least until their butts start to hurt.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Matt DiLallo]

That makes Petrobras (NYSE: PBR  ) one of the best pure-play stocks to buy if you want to invest in the growth of oil production. The company is investing heavily to explore and develop these massive oil fields with a goal to produce 1 million barrels of oil per day by 2016. But it's not the only company operating offshore: Seadrill (NYSE: SDRL  ) is another potential stock play here. One of the interesting things it's doing is looking at spinning off part its Brazilian business. This will help the company navigate the country's regulations while retaining upside as offshore oil production grows. It will also help the company to continue producing income to keep its top-tier dividend flowing back to investors.

When judging a company's prospects, how quickly it turns cash outflows into cash inflows can be just as important as how much profit it's booking in the accounting fantasy world we call "earnings." Best Mid Cap Stocks To Watch For 2014

I just got back from the Hennessy Fund’s grand reveal of the new portfolio for its Hennessy Cornerstone Mid Cap 30 Fund (HFMDX), which gets rebalanced once a year.

The fund uses a quantitative screen to select 30 stocks with low valuation and high momentum, and last year it loaded up on companies that would be using their cash balance sheets for buybacks, dividends and acquisitions.

That portfolio has done well. The Hennessy Cornerstone Mid Cap 30 Fund has returned 12.3% so far this year, easily topping the 7.8% return in the S&P MidCap 400 and nearly equal to the S&P 500′s 12.4% return.

This year, portfolio managers Neil Hennessy and Brian Peery think companies will be doing their spending on capital improvements and hiring, rather than buybacks, dividends and acquisitions, as the United States economy continues to grow at a slow and steady pace. There’s nothing that can hurt the U.S. economy “short of a catastrophe,” Hennessy said. “Any pullback [in the stock market] is a buying opportunity.”

For Google, the shift in the way the justice system looks at and handles patent infringement claims meant its subsidiary, Motorola Mobility, unsuccessfully bid to convince U.S. courts that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) was illegally using Google's/Motorola's approach for sending data to a mobile device. For Akamai Technologies, it means that the technology company will need to re-explain - and ultimately re-prove - to an appellate court that Limelight Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:LLNW) infringed on an Akamai patent even though a lower court had already ruled in favor of AKAM. And for Soverain Software, the legal system's new attitude meant it wouldn't even bother hearing its appeal for a case it lost against Newegg last year... a case it's tried against several companies, losing every time.

PHOT soared more than 130% since the end of last year on the legalization of marijuana. x86: With regards to the specific x86 server business, it seems that IBM is considering the possibility of fully divesting it. According to Morgan Stanley, the server business generated about $4.9 billion of the company's $15.4 billion in server sales last year. This enormous volume is due to the fact that IBM may be producing the overall market's highest volumes, at the lowest profit level; which suggests this segment is doomed. Finally, IBM has a history of aggressive shifts to areas with better growth prospects and margins. For example, the company agreed to sell off the PC business to Lenovo (LNVGF.PK) at a moment where the PC still seemed attractive.
